ABOUT THE ARTIST ABOUT THE WRITER

I have been painting and drawing all my life. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Painting and my Master of Arts in English from San Jose State University.

This painting was inspired by a photograph taken around 1933. It shows my father and his 2 brothers with their Piggley Wiggley wagon in a pumpkin field. Pearl Dewey Copeland is on the left. Donald William Copeland is in the middle. My father, James Delos Copeland, was on the right. All three boys have passed on.

My paintings have been exhibited at:

  • San Jose State University's Art Department
  • Villa Montalvo Art Center (Saratoga)
  • Los Altos Art Club shows
  • Open Studios (Santa Cruz) (Silicon Valley)
  • Tribal Visions Gallery (Santa Cruz)
  • Atelier Gallery (Santa Cruz)
  • Herland Cafe and Bookstore (Santa Cruz)
  • Art21 Gallery (Palo Alto)
  • An outdoor panomural exhibition (with 150+ artists) (Main St., Mendocino California)
  • Various arts & crafts fairs

Nels Eric Oback, Leroy Parker, John Hunter, and Dave Stewart were my mentors/instructors at San Jose State University.

My portfolio includes work in watercolors, oils, acrylics, and various drawing mediums.

I am a retired lampworker (glass beadmaker). For more information, click here to look and read about my beads and beadmaking!

Dr. Daniel Robuck - Dr. Phil Life Strategist

Cousette Copeland is a dreamer, a swimmer, a painter, a traveler, a writer, and more. Born at Ft. Benning Army Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, she lived in Japan from age 2 till age 6. Japanese was her first language. She has since traveled all over the U.S., much of Europe, Morocco, the Caribbean, and parts of Mexico. She has ridden horses, swum with dolphins, turtles, and reef sharks, and dreamed of going into outer space.
A professional student Cousette attended San Jose State University (SJSU) for 19 years, during which time she worked at four careers – sales, accounting, teaching, and technical writing. In 1971, she began her studies as Oceanography major; earned her B.A. in Art (Painting) in 1975; continued her studies in Environmental Studies, Photography, Physics, Literature, and Writing; was invited into the English Graduate Program in 1983; earned her M.A. in English (Writing) in 1986. During her time in the English Department, her stories and poems garnered more Phelan Awards for Literary Excellence than any other graduate student; she also won the Anne Lillis Scholarship for Graduate Writing.
Cousette’s stories and poems appeared in REED Literary Magazine, Cow-in-the-Road (an arts journal), and in her Master’s Thesis Superstitions and Other Fears. Her journal articles have appeared in THE SPUR Equestrian News, Lapidary Journal, Diabetes Forecast, a Chicken Soup for the Soul publication, and numerous newspaper editorials. Her technical writing has benefited users of numerous Silicon Valley high-tech companies.
In addition to being a writer, Cousette is a painter in all mediums. Her paintings and writings are eclectic and imaginative. She teaches painting to adults. Photos of some of her paintings are included in this book.
Having lived in California since 1959, Cousette considers herself a Californian and says, “There’s no place like home!”

Cousette Copeland's Silicon Valley: Fact and Fiction is a historical record of the changes that occurred in Silicon Valley from 1961 to present. It is part history, part memoir, rich with photographs, and with a little poetry and fiction. Silicon Valley: Fact and Fiction is an exploration of Silicon Valley's complex Landscape and Industrial Changes, Ethnic Identity, San Jose's rich cultural arts, San Jose State University's place in International kendo, and Silicon Valley's high-tech world. Copeland's book describes her contacts with lesser-known, but much loved citizens of San Jose, as well as with well-known figures, such as Poet Robert Bly, Nobel Prize Winner Doris Lessing, and Cirque du Soleil star Vladimir Kekhaial. Copeland reveals 'hidden' treasures about San Jose State University, Poetry Center San Jose, Upstairs at Eulipia, and more. Her intimate history is as one of the people who make up Silicon Valley's talented and diverse population. It is a personal and fascinating view of the time in which 'The Valley of Heart's Delight' became 'Silicon Valley!'
